DNC Day One
Democrats gather in Chicago to officially nominate Kamala Harris and begin the 2024 campaign in gusto. Night one is behind us and looking back, there might be some signs of things to come hidden in the festivities.
AOC is Going to be a Senator Someday
AOC had a primetime speaking slot which in and of itself is notable. Kamala and the Democrats did not have to give AOC a speaking slot at all, to do so maybe alienates some more moderate members, but signals a willingness to play ball with the left.
To her credit, AOC is one of the best stump speakers in the game right now so it was a moment she was well prepared for. The speech was not a populist barnburner but signaled the intersectional working people’s message AOC and the left of the party are known for. Again, it’s notable the party chose to center that message at all.
Hillary Clinton is as Bad as Ever
Hillary Clinton spoke as well. I guess you kind of have to let her speak, but it’s pained. It seems almost like the stakes are so high because she is so bad. Had Hillary just won in 2016, we wouldn’t be grasping for year 10 of Trump with “democracy on the ballot.”
Hillary Clinton is as awful as ever but it’s good they got her out of the way on day one I suppose.
Joe Biden Steps Aside Gracefully
The entire night was billed as one for Joe Biden to pass the baton, despite some hard feelings, he was to pass the party to Kamala Harris and thus the future. And that is exactly what he did.
Joe Biden played the hits, Donald Trump as a threat to democracy recognized via Charlottesville, the pandemic and Build Back Better, all the overtures the administration has hit for the last 4 years. The stakes could not have been higher and the promises more delivered.
The problem is that the stakes are dangerously high and delivering on that agenda has been stifled, stymied, and stagnate the entire administration. But people were willing to pretend that wasn’t the case and allow Joe Biden to play the hits as he steps aside gracefully, without marching straight into a loss against Trump.
Biden was touted as FDR, he was barely above catastrophic. But perhaps stepping aside and avoiding true castrophy will be his real legacy. In which case, thank you Joe, we will let you bow out gracefully as we can, just as the Democrats did.
